Tinfoil Saggar horsehair lidded pot
Raku is a method of firing pottery. Each piece is fired in a kiln outdoors until the piece reaches about 1800 F. The piece is removed, with tongs, while red hot and placed in a metal can with a combustible material, like paper or sawdust. The combustible material ignites, the can is covered and sealed. The fire and smoke react with the glaze to create very unique and unpredictable colors, lusters, and patterns. The smoky black is painted on the pot from the carbon released from the smoke of the extinguished fire. Raku pottery does not hold water or food.
Each piece of Raku is a one of a kind work of art!
